Płomyk szydlasty tworzy zbitą darń z płożących się pędów, o zimozielonych liściach. Liście szydlaste, sztywne, długości 12-18 mm są delikatnie owłosione. Kwiaty o klinowatych płatkach korony, zebrane są po 3-6 w baldachogrona, w zależności od odmiany różnią się zabarwieniem. Mogą być białe, różowe, liliowe, czerwone, jednobarwne lub z oczkiem.
